You’ve heard it before: If you want to be successful, you need an amazing morning routine.

You’ve experienced it before: At the end of the day, you’re fried and just want to veg-out and binge.

In this short article, I’ll explain why going to bed 1 hour earlier may solve most of your problems, and radically improve your motivation and confidence.

First, let’s talk about willpower.

Low Willpower Leads To High Consumption At Night

There are different views of willpower, but the most common perspective is that it relates to your energy and decision-making.

The more decisions you’ve made, the less energy you have (hence, the term “decision-fatigue”).

Making decisions is taxing. Every decision, even opening your phone and replying to a text message, exhausts your energy.

At the end of the day, you’re fried. You’ve made a lot of decisions—big and small—and you just want to chill-out.

But there’s a problem: You’re exhausted. And therefore, whatever you do will probably not be ultimately good for you.

When exhausted, your desire is to consume.

When exhausted, you don’t adequately weigh the outcomes of your behaviors. Therefore, you’re more likely to make low-quality choices.

You consume low-quality media.

You consume low-quality food.

Why does this matter?

  1. Your choices dramatically impact your confidence
  2. Your choices—particularly at night—determine the quality of your sleep
  3. The momentum of your evening influences your momentum the next morning
  4. If you carry this on, it’s a vicious and backward cycle
  5. The quality of rest, direction, and confidence in the morning determines how your day will go
  6. If you’ve made good decisions the night before, getting adequate rest, and have set yourself up for success, you’ll make increasingly high-quality decisions each day
  7. Over time, your confidence will increase
  8. As your confidence increases, your decision-making improves and success surges

The antidote is simply to go to bed.

Go To Bed 1 Hour Sooner For Increased Confidence

If you go to bed 1 hour sooner, you save yourself from time-wasting and consumption during night time hours.

If you go to bed 1 hour sooner, you’ll be able to wake up earlier, with more energy and more confidence.

If you go to bed 1 hour sooner, you’ll have more confidence the next morning because you won’t have consumed wasteful junk the night before.

Your brain and body will be better, because you went to bed and recovered rather than did damage on your brain, body, and mindset.

Research shows that confidence is the byproduct of previous choices.

  • Confidence is the foundation of success.
  • Confidence is your belief in your own ability to learn and succeed.
  • Confidence is also what allows for mental flexibility, which is essential to imagination and transformation.

Your future is the size of your imagination.

Your imagination is the size of your confidence.

Your “future self”—that person you are becoming—should be intentionally designed. Very few people are deeply specific about who they become. As American actress, Lily Tomlin, explained, looking back over her life and career,

“I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific.”

Every morning, you can and should become the creator of your future self.

Each day, if you make progress toward bigger goals, your confidence will increase.

With increased confidence comes increased clarity, and boldness, about your future self.

You won’t have to wait to see who you become. You’ll make bold decisions. You’ll make fast decisions. Your “future self” will become the filter for everything you do.

You’ll increase your standards for everything in your world. You’ll stop putting up with garbage beneath your dreams.

What To Do Before You Go To Bed

If you’re going to go to bed 1 hour sooner than normal, then what should you do before going to bed?

Remove decision fatigue for the next morning. That’s what you should do.

  • Pull out your journal or grab a pad of paper and write down what you want to do the next morning.
  • This list shouldn’t be long: No more than 3 items.

But make the list, so that tomorrow morning when you wake up, you don’t have to think about it.

Your brain is actually more analytic in the evening. It’s the perfect time to take 2-3 minutes and think about what you want to do the next day.

Once you have your list made, go to bed.

Do your future self the favor.

It may feel weird going to bed at like 8:30 or 9PM (or sooner!). But you’ll get used to it. Your body may crave the addictions you’ve been feeding it at night.

But lay in bed. You’ll quickly fall asleep.

Leave your phone in a different room, on airplane mode.

You’ve made your list. You have nothing else to think about. Go to bed.

Overtime, you’ll really love that sleep, especially if you’re waking up earlier and getting more done.

Earn your sleep.

Set your morning up for success.

Build your confidence every day.

If you do this, then in a short period of time, your productivity and future will sky-rocket.
